H2-Wyhlen at the start as a real-world laboratory for the energy transition
Green electricity is turned into green hydrogen at the Grenzach-Wyhlen hydroelectric power plant.
Water is a renewable energy source that can be used to generate environmentally friendly green power. At the Grenzach-Wyhlen hydroelectric power plant in the district of Lörrach, this is processed into hydrogen in a power-to-gas plant. The existing infrastructure with the adjacent district and industrial area will be expanded into a test site for this purpose. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supports the research project as a so-called real-world laboratory for the energy transition.
One of the goals of the real-world laboratory is to create a guideline for the efficient operation of power-to-gas plants. This is intended to serve energy supply companies and enterprises. Heat is also generated during the production of hydrogen. In the future, this will supply the planned residential neighbourhood near the power plant with heat.
