The call aims to reduce primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

At the end of January, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) published a new funding call for resource efficiency. Against the background of the energy transition, the BMWi supports both research and development projects. These projects are intended to help reduce the demand for raw materials and resources throughout the entire industry. Parallel to this, projects that optimise energy transition technologies in order to ensure more efficient use of resources are also to play a central role. The funding call pursues a systemic approach in the context of the energy research programme: the focus is on reducing primary energy consumption and energy-related CO2 emissions.

Research teams are invited to submit their ideas for innovative projects dedicated to the circular economy and the responsible use of materials and resources.

In order to ensure that the final call for funding is strongly oriented towards the target groups and research requirements, the BMWi first conducted a consultation process. This took place last autumn as part of the Energy Research Networks. Scientists and industry representatives were able to contribute their insights on key research questions relating to circular economy through a survey and an online workshop. The results of the exchange and the insights gained were incorporated into the funding call for the research area of resource efficiency in the context of the energy transition.

Research teams can submit project outlines for the funding call until 28 March 2021. Further information on how to apply is available on the BMWi's website on applied energy research.
